NORTHERN SAVANNAH

Main Drivers of Degradation

  • Demographic growth;

  • Extensive and non-integrated agro-pastoral production systems;

  • Disappearance of the forest on river banks and hills

  • Too short fallow periods, which no longer allow the forest to recover;

  • Growth of agro-industrial plantations;

  • Huge dependence on wood fuel to meet energy needs in dryer, low income areas

Sub National Restoration Opportunities Assessment Methodology (ROAM) Conducted in Northern Regions

WWF FLR in Africa Initiative, via the Cameroon office just completed application of a sub national Restoration Opportunities Assessment Methodology (ROAM), in these landscapes of the Northern region; the periphery and some transhumance areas of the FARO and BENOUE Technical Operations Unit (TOU).

A preliminary intervention area estimated at 27,000 ha of degraded landscapes has been identified.

Degradation types comprise; livestock overgrazing and passage zones, excessive fuelwood extraction, soil fertility depletion, hard pans and soil erosion.

A Participant’s database is currently under completion as an important stage to begin engagement.

More accurate algorithms to estimate dynamic cost per ha calculations for restoration interventions are underway.

Meanwhile, a working estimate of $US 300 per ha (half the per ha cost estimate by the WWF FLR in Africa Initiative) has been applied.

As this stage ensues, engagement with Implementers, Service Providers and Investors has already commenced.

This stage began with official launching of the WWF led Initiative in Cameroon by MINEPDED in 2022.
