Korup United, the Voluntary Association of ex-personnel of the Korup Project (1988-2003), is organizing a two-day Symposium, October 31 - November 01, 2024, on Conservation and Sustainable Development in the Lower Guinea Congolian Forest Ecosystem. This event also commemorates the 38th Anniversary of the creation of the Korup National Park in October 1986 by Presidential Decree as the first rainforest IUCN Category II National park in Cameroon.

This initiative follows extensive, active consultations with various stakeholders, including government officials, private and parastatal sector, civil society, traditional authorities and individual experts.

This Symposium is supported by GIZ's Bio-Innovation Africa project, the University of Buea, the Mohamed Bin Zayed Species Conservation Initiative, Pamol Plantation's Feed Mundemba Initiative amongst others.

Over the past months, the organizing committee has been engaging key national personalities, including inter alia; Chief Dr. Blessed Okolle - Special Adviser to the Prime Minister, Head of Government - Republic of Cameroon, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Buea - Pr. Horace Manga Ngomo; the CEO, TELCAR Cocoa Cameroon - Mrs Kate Kanyi Tometi Fotso, the General Managers Pamol Plantation and SOWEDA, amongst others.

The organizing committee is finalizing preparations for the Symposium by involving a broad range of Stakeholders, and developing a comprehensive long term Strategy for Sustainable Development across the Lower Guinea Congolian Forest Ecosystem.

In the short term, the outcomes of this Symposium will feed directly into the Resolutions of the South West Chiefs Conference coming up this December 2024, meanwhile long-term plans would involve vigorous mobilization of technical, human and financial resources to achieve the vision of Korup United across the Lower Guinea Congolian Forest Ecosystems of Cameroon.
